The highlight of the winter calendar, especially for 420s, the Rutland Challenge 2009 for the John Merricks Tiger Trophy is on 7 & 8 February,

For anyone who does not know, this event attracts many of the best centreboard sailors in the country. Since John Merricks & Ian Lovering won in 1994, more than 65% of winning sailors have been 420 sailors and 50% of the winning boats have been 420s. The current holder, Graham Vials, former lead Class Coach and National Champion, has won twice! (OK in 2008 in a Foiling Moth, but it was in the 420 the first time!). Of course, 420 sailors do not usually need reminding that this is also the black tie highlight of the winter (so time to sponge off the salt after the Pwllheli Nationals)....very much a John Merricks affair!
