Carl Evans and Peter Burling
(NZL), Champions of the International 420 Class Open World Championship
Title in Ladies Champs goes to
British Hannah Mills and Peggy Webster
The International 420
Class Open and Ladies World Championships came to a close today, Sunday, 6th
of August, in a last exciting racing day. The Worlds started on the past 29th
of August and have been taking place in the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
under the organization of Real Club Nutico de Gran Canaria.
The prediction was fulfilled
in the Open Gold finals as the title went to the crew of Carl Evans and Peter
Burling from New Zealand who did not compete in the last race as they led with
a big difference of points over the rest of the competitors. Also the second
winners, Simon Cooke and Scott Illingworth (NZL) scored a DNC in the second
race.
Fernando Lodos out of
Real Club Nutico de Gran Canaria, participated with the French team, sailing
with Julien Pulve as crew who took a third place. They were followed by the
crews out of the Race Team of Real Club Nutico de Gran Canaria, Jos Antonio
Medina & Antonio del Catillo-Olivares and Francisco Crdenes & Juan
Manuel Cerezo.
It did not happen the
same with regards to the Ladies, who have to sail the two races-not apt to
heart sufferers!- The title finally goes for the British crew of Hannah Mills
and Peggy Webster, after a second and a third place in the two last races.
Hannah Mills and Peggy Webster are also the current 420 Junior Ladies European
champions, and they will compete in Tavira (POR), next week to fight for the
title again.
Tara Pacheco and Elena
Barambio out of Club de Regatas del Suroeste de Mogn, who were leading until
yesterday, lost their possibilities to obtain the title gaining only a sixth
and a seventh place. They finished, however, as second World champions.
The organization was
able to hold the 17 races scheduled for the whole week as the Trade Winds
coming out of the north kept being steady, from up to down intensity, starting
on Monday with a strength of 5 and ending on Sunday with a strength of 2. The same
thing with the sea conditions, commencing with big waves and ending with a waveless
sea.
The rest of the
sailors in the Spanish team, Agueda Suria and Marta Martnez from Valencia
achieved a decent seventh place.
These Championships
have been possible thanks to the support of the Government of the Canary
Islands, Cabildo de Gran Canaria, City Town of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and
also to the support of a wide number of public institutions and private
companies.
