Joining the Class

If you have any queries about membership and related matters - or you do not know who else to ask - please contact the Membership Secretary, Tony Mapplebeck. He can be contacted ion 07831 128 747 or Send Email.

Hopefully, some of your queries will be answered in the following notes.

You need to be a Member of the Class Association to enter Class Events, Class Training, the RYA Youth Championships and any other events that are organised under the ISAF Rules of Sailing and in accordance with the ISAF International 420 Class Rules.

Both sailors' membership cards are required to validate a boat's Measurement Certificate. You will need a valid Measurement Certificate, issued by the RYA, for any 420 you sail in at Class and other events (i.e. in current owner's name)- see separate notes on Measurement Certificates.

The Membership Card can be particularly important if you enter an international event, so probably best to keep your card(s) with your Measurement Certificate ready to rock and roll!

The membership year runs from 1 September to 30 August, but someone entering the July Class Training or the Nationals for the first time, will have their membership valid for the full year following.

Please apply for membership as early as possible before your first Event/Training session, so that we can process your application. You will need to supply a photo - head and shoulders (though we can undertake the necessary surgery!).

If possible, please send this electronically - i.e. as a jpeg, by e-mail- as we have to scan hard copy photos, and strange forms of dermatitis seem to creep in sometimes!

Please complete the 2008-9 Membership Application Form and return it with your subs.

Sometimes a sailor - helm or crew - may join the Class, but not yet have a regular sailing partner. If you want, you can pay for a "Non-Specific Crew Membership" (NSCM) (actually the helm or the crew can be non-specific!), which will entitle you to sail with non-members at events, perhaps while you are trying things out or if you regularly sail with different partners. However, both sailors need to be full members to participate in Class Training. Also, boats where one of the sailors is not inm membership, are not eligible for prizes at the National Championships.
